Herttoniemi Metro Station is one of the first stations built in Helsinki and the second busiest in East Helsinki. The lighting of the station building and its outdoor areas was renewed during the station’s refurbishment in autumn 2025. The updated lighting became one of the most significant elements shaping the station’s new appearance.

Because the station is a busy transport hub, closing it during the refurbishment was not an option. For this reason, AICCI designed its luminaires and installation systems for rapid and straightforward installation. The demanding metro environment (IK10, IP65) required a durable and reliable solution, and AICCI delivered a complete package comprising the design and manufacturing of the station’s pendant luminaires, platform downlights, and their associated installation systems and wiring.

The design of the luminaires and the installation system aimed to fulfil the station’s defined visual identity and all technical requirements while adhering to circular economy principles. The modular installation system developed for the ticket hall is designed for long service life and full reusability: it can be dismantled, repainted, and reassembled into new configurations as future needs evolve. The system also enables effortless integration of pendant luminaires and the installation of pre wired units to simplify on site work.

AICCI designed, manufactured, and delivered both the ticket hall pendant luminaires with their installation system and the platform downlights with their mounting frames and external drivers as ready to install assemblies. In the ticket hall and staircases, 420 customised pendant luminaires are suspended at 30 different heights, creating a clear spatial rhythm and illuminating the ground level building volume both from the inside and from the outside. With the renewed lighting, the glass walled station building now stands out after dark as a warm, lantern like landmark.

On the platform level, illumination is provided by 422 cylindrical downlights delivered pre integrated into their mounting frames. These pre assembled units accelerated installation and minimised disruption to passengers.
