Art of Darkness is an EU‑funded project that explores the cultural, aesthetic, and ecological values of darkness and develops design practices for urban environments based on these insights. Through collaboration between cities, research institutions, and creative professionals, the project pilots new urban lighting solutions in five European countries. The light‑art pathway in Pikisaari, Oulu, is one of these pilots and forms part of the European Capital of Culture Oulu2026 programme.
The Pikisaari light‑art pathway runs along the seashore of Pikisaari, an island located near the centre of Oulu, where a multilayered and culturally significant environment meets rich urban nature. This unique setting shapes the approach to lighting: the aim is not to erase darkness, but to complement it gently and with respect for the place.
AICCI’s role in the Pikisaari light‑art pathway project is to design and manufacture the permanently installed light bollards along the walkway. Although the Pikisaari bollards have been created specifically for this site, they have been developed with a broader perspective: the same solution — or a tailored variation of it — can be used in other locations as well, particularly in environments that seek to honour the values of darkness, including dark‑sky principles and nature‑aware design, where deliberate, context‑sensitive lighting is essential.
The Pikisaari pathway bollards will be installed in May 2026. In November 2026, light artists will take the pathway bollards into use through FLASH, the Finnish Light Art Association.
