Hellan Sydän is an environment light artwork designed by visual artist Teijo Karhu and designer Samu Aarnio in the residential area of Penttilä, on the banks of the Pielisjoki River in Joensuu. Unveiled in November 2019, the artwork chronicles local historical events through illuminating environmental artwork and stories told online. The work consists of a physical installation and an associated website.
The light art work is programmed to change its lighting on well-known, national and international anniversaries, a total of about 20 days a year. Most special days are linked to local events related to North Karelia. There are also a few national anniversaries, such as Finland’s Independence Day. When the lighting of the work changes, a related text will appear on the Hellan Sydän website.
AICCI’s task covered the design development and lighting construction of the illuminating house and DMX control unit, while LITE Design was responsible for lighting control desing.
